The landscape was striking but unfortunately a tragic event occurred shortly after I arrived, a person apparently jumped off the cliff. I didn't see it happen as I had walked down the road to the Birling Gap but when I returned I saw helicopters circling and the police had cordoned off an area.

The place is littered with memorials to the dead, as this is a fairly common occurrence at Beachy Head - the third most popular suicide destination in the world.
